Course description

The course will cover the principles and applications of locoregional anaesthetic and analgesic techniques as well as intravenous analgesia in small animals, suitable for general practitioners as well as the specialised veterinarian in small animal practice.

Basic every-day techniques for locoregional anaesthesia and analgesia during surgery as well as more advanced techniques for localizing nerves and techniques for long term pain management will be discussed and practiced during wet lab sessions

Learning objectives 

After the course the participants will:

• Be updated in the clinical pharmacology of drugs used in locoregional anaesthesia
• Understand why to use regional or general anaesthesia or analgesia techniques
• Be able to define which patient and procedure is suitable for locoregional anaesthesia
• Be comfortable using different techniques in specific procedures: lumpectomy/wounds, limb surgery, abdominal surgery, thoracic procedures, procedures on the head and in the mouth
• Have competence to identify the local nerve
• Be able to deliver local analgesic/anaesthetics through catheters
• Understand benefits vs complications and risks
• Be familiar with ultrasound and nerve stimulation guidance

 

Programme:

Day One:

• A review of pain transmission and the overall role of local anaesthesia in multi-modal ananlgesia techniques
• Local anaesthetics – what are they and how do they work?
• Overview of techniques – specific nerve blocks – epidural  and neuraxial annalgesia, ocular and head (incl. dental) blocks; other peripheral blocks, limbs and IVRA
• Overview of techniques – practical demonstrations and wet lab session. Participants to attempt blocks

Day two:

• Theory of nerve stimulation and ultrasound
• Loco-regional techniques using the nerve stimulator and ultrasound
• Practical demonstration and wet lab session with nerve stimulation and ultrasound
